I held Out For So Long...
Growing up I had friends who were drinking coffee as far back as grade 7.
Not I...
By the time I was in high school, the number of friends I had who were drinking coffee had grown to nearly 50%.
Not I...
When I entered the "real world" *insert some tacky line from The Matrix* and started working for a living, unless they were tea drinkers or some kind of weirdo, everyone was drinking coffee.
Not I...
I was the weirdo. I was 25 years old and had completely resisted making that black bean of blackness a part of my daily routine. Don't get me wrong; I didn't dislike coffee by any means. There were many occasions, whether it be an after-dinner coffee at my fancy grandparents, a social situation because someone was doing a Tim's run and I wanted to feel social, or simply because I was somewhere and someone offered me one, where I would indulge in a cup. I just didn't need to for energy or to wake myself up, and I thought that those who did were weak.
Soooo Many Meetings...
When I was 25, I started a new position at work. It was one of those positions where you are sucking up to potential clients so that they will spend 10s if not 100s of thousands of dollars with your company. With a job like that came a lot of meetings. How better to suck up to a potential client than to know in advance what they take in their coffee and have one there waiting for them? Soon, my coffee intake went from 1 a month to 3-4 a day. You see, it didn't build the same rapport if I wasn't also drinking a coffee. So, soon I was hooked.
My Coffee Evolution...
I can't think of many new coffee drinkers who prefer the taste of black coffee. It's definitely an acquired taste. I was no different. For the longest time, the more cream and sugar there to get rid of that coffee taste the better. Slowly I moved from double-double to 2 creams and 1 sugar, then 2 creams and a sweetener, then 2 creams, then 1 cream, then milk, and finally.... I drink my coffee black.
This evolution was less about flavour and admittedly, with each transition, it took me time to adjust to the new taste. Nah, for the most part, it was about health and trying to cut as many calories from this daily ritual as possible.
Jump To Now...
Yes, I'm addicted, and yes, I need to cut back, but to be fair I RARELY ever exceed the daily recommended limit of caffeine. Depending on the day of the week, my workload, and whether I need to get in front of a mic or be on camera, my coffee is also sometimes supplemented with energy drinks. Again, on these days, less coffee is consumed.
I have fun with it though. I don't typically buy Starbucks, and if I do, it's because they have some over-priced sugar-filled thing that I want to try. In fact, most of my coffee comes from wherever I find it and I'm not picky about the type... I sound like a total junkie. Honestly though, 9 times out of 10 my coffee just comes from my French press that I load up with some freshly-ground beans.
What are your coffee habits?
